The Role of Family Link Workers in Supporting Parents Through Uncertainty
When a child is diagnosed with a life-threatening or life-shortening condition, parents are often thrust into a world of uncertainty. Alongside caring for their child’s complex health needs, families may find themselves managing hospital appointments, social care assessments, education plans, benefits applications and housing challenges. The emotional impact can be overwhelming. At Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice, we recognise that families need more than clinical care. They need practical support, emotional reassurance and someone who can help them navigate the many challenges that come with caring for a child who is seriously unwell. That is why every family referred to Noah’s Ark is allocated a dedicated Family Link Worker, a service that sets us apart from other hospices and provides a lifeline for families during difficult times.
What is a Family Link Worker?
Our award-winning Family Link team is the first point of contact for families. Following an initial assessment, the team then tailor their support to the individual needs of the child and their family. They provide emotional and practical support, such as signposting, advocacy and welfare advice. The team provide ongoing support for the family, which allows the opportunity to build positive, trusting and cooperative relationships with families. A vital bond for the families they support, the team are there for the family on every step of their journey. This support continues for as long as a family needs our services and, where appropriate, extends into bereavement support following the death of a child. For parents who are often required to tell their story repeatedly to different professionals, having one trusted person who understands their circumstances can make a significant difference.
Supporting Families Through Complex Systems
Families caring for a child with a life-threatening or life-shortening condition frequently interact with multiple organisations and professionals. There may be consultants, community nurses, therapists, social workers, teachers, housing officers and benefits advisors involved in their child’s care. Trying to coordinate all these different services can feel like a full-time job.
Family Link Workers help families navigate these complex systems by:
Coordinating communication between professionals and services.
Supporting families with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).
Helping parents access financial support and benefits.
Liaising with housing providers about adaptations and accessibility needs.
Working with social care and community organisations.
Advocating for families when challenges arise.
Signposting parents to additional support and resources.
By taking on much of this practical burden, Family Link Workers give families more time and energy to focus on caring for their child and spending valuable time together.
Helping Parents Manage Uncertainty
One of the greatest challenges parents face is uncertainty about the future. Medical conditions can change unexpectedly, care needs may increase and families are often forced to make difficult decisions while processing their own emotions.
Family Link Workers provide a steady and reassuring presence during these times. They offer practical guidance, emotional support and continuity when families need it most. At Noah’s Ark, the Family Link Team often describe their role as doing the “thinking” and the “doing” so families can focus on the “being” and the “feeling”. This philosophy sits at the heart of their work. By helping with practical challenges and reducing unnecessary stress, they enable parents to focus on making memories, spending time together and being present with their child.
The Power of Partnership Working
A key part of the Family Link Worker role is building strong partnerships with organisations that can provide practical support when families need it most. Caring for a child with a life-shortening condition can place enormous financial and emotional pressure on families, and often the support they need extends beyond healthcare. One of the strongest examples of this collaborative approach is Noah’s Ark’s partnership with Miracles, through its Feed London programme. Three years ago, the partnership began with one simple question: “What do you need?” Today, it has become a lifeline for families supported by Noah’s Ark across London. Miracles is a charity dedicated to supporting children and families experiencing illness, poverty and crisis. Through Feed London, families receive nutritious food boxes containing ingredients for six healthy meals, child-friendly recipes, supermarket vouchers and activities for children. These packages are delivered at the start of every major school holiday, helping families access practical support during particularly challenging periods.
Over the past three years, Noah’s Ark families have benefited enormously from this partnership. The Family Link Team regularly works with families facing financial hardship alongside the emotional demands of caring for a seriously unwell child. Through tailored food support, emergency funding and practical assistance, Miracles has helped fill critical gaps in support. For the Family Link Team, the relationship stands out because of its responsiveness and trust. “Our families are often in crisis,” explains Jo, Family Link Manager at Noah’s Ark. “What makes Feed London and Miracles different is that they understand our timeframes. They don’t ask us to fill out endless forms or wait weeks for decisions. They trust our judgement and respond immediately.” Several times a year, Feed London provides tailored food parcels adapted to the specific needs of each household, including dietary requirements, family size and the ages of children in the home. Alongside fresh produce and groceries, families receive supermarket vouchers that help ease pressure on household budgets.
The partnership has also enabled Noah’s Ark to respond rapidly during emergencies. In one case, a family whose benefits had unexpectedly been stopped received urgent supermarket vouchers within 24 hours. In another, a family caring for a child receiving end-of-life care obtained emergency financial support to help manage soaring energy bills associated with their child’s complex care needs. “It was immediate,” says Jo. “The emotional impact on that family was huge. It gave them breathing space at a time when they desperately needed it.” These partnerships demonstrate the unique role Family Link Workers play. They do more than coordinate care; they create networks of support around families, bringing together charities, statutory services and community organisations to ensure parents can access help quickly and effectively.
National Recognition for an Exceptional Team
The impact of Noah’s Ark’s Family Link Team was recognised nationally in 2024 when they were named Hospice Team of the Year at the prestigious Hospice UK Awards. The team received the Hospice UK Michael Howard Award for Hospice Team of the Year, which celebrates outstanding teams that have made a significant difference to the people they support. The award was presented at the Hospice UK Conference in Glasgow, where Noah’s Ark CEO, Sophie Andrews OBE, accepted the award on behalf of the team and had the honour of meeting Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal. The judges were particularly impressed by the Family Link Team’s collaborative approach and commitment to building strong external partnerships. The team’s work is unique within the hospice sector. Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice is the only hospice to allocate a dedicated Family Link Worker to every family from referral onwards, ensuring continuity of support throughout a family's journey.
The Family Link Team consists of highly skilled and compassionate professionals who work tirelessly to coordinate the many elements involved in caring for a child with a life- life-threatening or life-shortening condition. Whether supporting families with healthcare, education, housing, social care or financial challenges, they consistently go above and beyond to make life easier for the families they support. Commenting on the award, Sophie Andrews OBE said:
“The team are tireless in supporting children and families to achieve the best possible outcomes and their dedication and tenacity delivers a first-class service that is vital to our offering and highly valued by families.” The judging panel also praised the team's ability to build meaningful partnerships that deliver real-world impact. Their work with local charities, social services and community organisations was recognised as a shining example of collaborative, family-centred care."
