Art Therapy

Art Therapy is the non-verbal communication of feelings and emotions through art.

Art Therapy focus on processing emotions and encouraging expression, regardless of artistic ability.

Sessions are either guided or free flowing, allowing the Therapist to take a very gentle, very accessible approach to support the individual.

About Art Therapy

Watch this short film to find out more about Art Therapy at Noah's Ark and how it can support you and your family.

The Theory Behind Art Therapy

Art Therapy allows your child and therapist to develop a relationship using different mark making, texture interaction and images.

Our professionally trained therapist will work to support and encourage your child’s emotional, social, and physical well-being. By establishing a relationship through art, we aim to help your child to process their experiences and explore new ways of relating to gain a greater sense of their self, gently leading to development and change. The aims of art therapy are not educationally focused, but are concerned with emotional processing, change and growth.

Sometimes the work is all about an image or a ‘thing’ that needs to be created, sometimes it is talking about image, and sometimes it’s about being with the materials and the interaction with your child in that moment. The very beauty of art being so subjective means it really does not have to make sense to anyone else.

Resources That We Use

We use a wide range of materials, depending on the needs and interests of your child.

From traditional materials like paint, pencils, clay and cardboard modelling, to something more focussed such as making a short film using stop animation.

At Noah’s Ark we encourage ways of creatively thinking outside the box, such as using a pottery wheel for sensory painting, which is accessible regardless of a child’s mobility. We’re also use digital technology; our Magic Carpet enables children to interact regardless of their abilities.
