Atiya’s Story
The children we support show us the life-changing power of play.
Vikki, Play Specialist at Noah’s Ark, shares Atiya’s story:
“Atiya had a rare genetic condition that made her skin extremely fragile, meaning she was in constant pain, covered in blisters, and required dressings that had to be changed twice a day. In my 12 years as a play specialist, it’s the most brutal condition I’ve ever witnessed.
At first, Atiya’s play sessions focused on helping her explore her feelings and creativity through arts and crafts, which she really enjoyed. These sessions gave her a safe space to express herself, and over time they became a place where she felt able to open up and trust us.”
“When Atiya developed cancer in her leg and approached the end of her life, her play sessions took on a deeper meaning. It became clear to me that she understood she was dying. Through play, she began to prepare - writing letters and creating gifts for her friends and family. Play became the transportation for her to be able to say goodbye to the people she loved the most.”
“During painful dressing changes, we used guided imagery to help transport Atiya to the most wonderful places in her imagination. I couldn’t take her pain away, but what I could do was distract her for just a few moments.
Atiya sadly died aged 14 in 2023. I am so grateful to have known her. She showed me the true power of play.”
