Technology such as Eyegaze can make a profound difference in the lives of children with life-limiting conditions. Many of us take the ability to express ourselves independently for granted, but for children who visit The Ark, like Ruby, technology can open up a whole new world of communication and connection.
Our partnership with organisations such as Lifelites, along with the dedication of our Senior Play Worker Ellie, is invaluable in providing these innovative technologies to those who need them most. Lifelites donates specialist assistive technology packages for children with life-limiting conditions, harnessing innovative technology to help empower them. The charity has been supporting us since 2014 and recently donated its fourth package of technology in 2023.
Ruby’s is a heartwarming story; using Eyegaze technology, which uses a special sensor to track her eye movement, Ruby was able to create a list of her favourite people. The technology empowers Ruby to communicate her wants, needs, and feelings. Her dad, Simon, shared with us her final list…
“She picked Mummy, Daddy… and Ellie! From the first session with Ellie, they clicked so well, and Ruby felt like, wow, someone finally understands me – it’s wonderful.”
Stories like Ruby’s serve as a reminder of the power of technology to enhance human connection and enable individuals to be seen and heard in ways that were previously unimaginable. It’s a beautiful example of how innovation and empathy can come together to transform lives and bring joy and fulfilment to those who need it most.
